Instructions for MLA Documents
Following these steps in the given order will create a document according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) rules using Microsoft Word in Print Layout View (View, Print Layout).
1.
Check your font (Times New Roman) and font size (12) shown in the Formatting
Toolbar
.
2. Set all margins to 1":
File, Page Setup, Margins, change Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margin settings as needed so that they are each set to 1",
click OK.
3. Create a header containing your last name and the page number align-right and .5" from top edge of paper:
View, Header and Footer, click
Align-Right
button,
verify that the font size is 12
(if
it is not change it), type your last name and a space, then click the Insert
Page Number
button on the Header and Footer Toolbar. Click Close
on the Header and Footer Toolbar.
4. Turn on double line spacing:
Format, Paragraph, look for the Line Spacing label and
change single
to double
by
clicking on the drop down arrow next to single and click on double. Click OK.
(This can also be done using the Line Spacing button on the Formatting Toolbar.
Choose the 2.0 option on the dropdown menu.)
5. Type name and course information:
Type full name and press the Enter key, type your instructor’s name and press Enter, type the course name and press Enter, type the current date and press Enter.
6. Paper Title:
Click the Center
alignment
button on the Formatting Toolbar and type the title of your paper. Press Enter
and then click the Align-Left
alignment button.

Set First Line Indent
to
automatically cause one half inch indentation at the beginning of all paragraphs in the document:
Format, Paragraph, look for the Special label and select First Line in the dropdown list, click OK.
8. Type paragraphs one after the other entering only when you get to the end of a paragraph. Author citations are made within the paragraphs and are placed in a set of parentheses stating the author’s last name and the page number within the citation where the material came from. Example: (White, 45).
9. Footnotes are used for explanatory note purposes only and are not used for author references:
Place the insertion point after the text where the footnote reference (tiny
superscripted number
)
is to display. Click Insert on the menu bar then Reference,
Footnote, Insert. Type footnote and then click back in the paper’s
paragraphs to get out of the footnote. Change the footnote style. Right click
the footnote and choose Style. Click the Modify button and change the font size
to 12. Click the Format button and then Paragraph. Change Special to First Line
and Line Spacing to Double. Click OK, OK, Apply. Your footnote should now look
just like the rest of your document format.
10. Alphabetize
references on a Works Cited Page and use a hanging indent
:
Place the Insertion Point after the last paragraph and enter. Click Insert, Break, Page Break, OK. Click on Format, Paragraph, and change First Line under Special to Hanging. Center the title Works Cited. Press Enter and then click Left Align. Type the references. Press enter only after completing each reference.
Save your document before closing the word processing program.
