Online Readiness Self-Assessment

 

Respond Yes or No to each of the following statements:  

  1. I have access to a personal computer less than 5 years old with an Internet connection.
    My computer has the appropriate software: Microsoft Word XP/2003 or WordPerfect;
    Internet Browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape); Virus Protection Software; any other
    software required by the course you are considering enrolling in (check the course syllabus).
     
  2. I understand basic computer terminology: Monitor, CPU, Mouse, Keyboard, RAM, Hard
    Drive, Floppy Disk, Smart Drive , etc.
     
  3. I have an E-mail address and know how to send messages and attach documents using E-mail.
     
  4. I know how to create a document using word processing software and save it in Rich Text
    Format (*.rtf) or Web Page Format (*.htm, *.html).
     
  5. I have basic word processing skills: Spell Check, Insert, Delete, Copy, Paste, Print, etc.
     
  6. I know how to use Online Search Engines.
     
  7. I have some experience with chat rooms and/or discussion boards.
     
  8. I am self-motivated, self-disciplined, and can work independently of others.
     
  9. I have college-level reading skills and enjoy reading.
     
  10. I can express myself well using written communication.
     
  11. I am able to follow written instructions.
     
  12. I can devote 6 to 8 hours a week working on my online class.
     
  13. I do not put off doing assignments until the day before they are due.
     
  14. I am responsible for what I learn.
     
  15. I will not hesitate to ask for help from my instructor.

If you have answered “yes” to 12 or more of these statements, you are capable of taking an online class.

If you have answered “yes” to 8 or more but less than 12, you might be successful in an online class but will need to seek help in improving your weaknesses.

If you have answered “yes” to less than 8, you should delay taking an online class until you become more familiar with online learning and have improved your computer skills.
