Principles of Accounting II - Managerial (3-3-4)

 Course Description

 

Accounting concepts and their application in transaction analysis and financial statement preparation; analysis of financial statements; and asset and equity accounting in proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. Introduction to cost behavior, budgeting, responsibility accounting, cost control, and product costing. Emphasis on managerial uses of accounting data. Accounting procedures and practices applicable to partnership and corporation; stocks and bonds; departmental - branch and manufacturing accounting; cost systems; budgeting; statement analysis and interpretation flow of funds and cash; and tax considerations.    Prerequisite: ACCT 2401  Lab Fee: $24

This class is offered via the Internet and student must have a basic understanding of computers, know how to use the Internet and email. The student must have access to a Internet Explorer 5 or higher browser and Microsoft Word and Excel. There may be additional plug-ins needed to view videos. This will be done in your class. Learning Outcomes 

 

The following learning outcomes will be addressed in this course:

  1. Managerial accounting terms and systems, budgeting, breakeven analysis, and decision making will be covered.
  2. This course develops skills that will enhance success in the workforce by introducing the critical role of focusing on information for internal decision makers.

Student Objectives

 

In order to complete this course, the student must be able to:

 

 

1. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of basic characteristics of a partnership and related equity accounting.
2. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of basic characteristics of a corporation and related equity accounting.
3. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of basic characteristics of accounting for long-term liabilities.
4. Construct/analyze/interpret financial statement using ratios
5. Construct/analyze/interpret statement of cash flows (indirect/direct methods).
6. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the basic characteristics of managerial accounting.
7. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the three broad functions of management.
8. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of variable and fixed costs.
9. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis.
10. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of Contribution margin.
11. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of break-even point.
12. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of margin of safety and sales target calculations.
13. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of Job and process costing.
14. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of budgetary planning, control and responsibility centers.
15. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of annual rate of return; cash payback techniques.
16. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of net present value and internal rate of return.

Student Contributions

 

In order to be successful in this Internet class, student should be able to spend 4 hours a day on the course, which includes reading assignments, videos, and quizzes and anything else assigned by instructor

It is the student's responsibility to drop a course by the appropriate deadline. If a student fails to drop the course, even if the student does not attend the class, he/she will receive a grade of "F" in the course

EXAMINATIONS

Examinations will be based on chapter readings, lectures, homework assignments, and laboratory assignments. Accounting is a comprehensive subject. Therefore, each exam is considered comprehensive.
MID-TERM AND FINAL EXAM MUST BE TAKEN IN PERSON. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO COME TO ONE OF THE CAMPUSES TO TAKE EXAM, ARRANGEMENT PRIOR TO EXAM MUST BE ARRANGED WITH INSTRUCTOR FOR ANOTHER APPROVED SITE AND PROCTOR. Dates of Mid-term and Final will be posted with plenty of time. There will be several days to schedule exam.

Course Policies

 

Plagiarism, the representation of someone else work as your own, or cheating on an examination or lab work will not be tolerated. Either case will result in a grade of zero on the work or examination in question. The second incident will be reported to the Dean of Instructional Services for disciplinary action.
